Florida will accept payments in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash

The Florida Tax Authority will partner with the BitPay payment system and allow citizens to pay for various services in cryptocurrency. Among other things, cryptocurrency will be used to pay property taxes and pay for the issuance of driver’s licenses, identification cards and car license plates, government spokesman Joel Greenberg said today.

The regulator decided to accept cryptocurrency as a means of payment to simplify the payment of fees, reduce the likelihood of fraud and identity theft, and to increase the transparency and accuracy of payments. Greenberg said such actions do not pose any risk to the country's budget associated with volatility.

“The purpose of my tenure is to make our services faster, more optimal and more modern. One of the ways to achieve this goal is the ability to pay with cryptocurrency,” says Greenberg.

For BitPay, this is the first collaboration with a government agency. Chief Compliance Officer Jeremy Beaudry is confident that blockchain will transform the financial industry by making payments faster, safer and cheaper.

Florida is not the only state to have this idea. Arizona and Georgia filed bills this year that would allow citizens to pay their state tax obligations in bitcoin and other types of cryptocurrencies, but neither of these bills passed.
