Russian Transneft used office computers for cryptocurrency mining

Vladimir Rushailo, vice president of the Russian company Transneft for security, speaking at the company’s expert council on cybersecurity, said that company employees used official equipment to mine cryptocurrencies.

“Attempts of unauthorized use of corporate information infrastructure to generate cryptocurrency are being identified, which can negatively affect the performance of computing power,” he explained.

As one of the Transneft representatives explained, we are talking about a number of incidents in Transneft subsidiaries - Transneft Diascan JSC, Transneft Baltic LLC and Svyaztransneft JSC. In October and November of this year, traces of Monero cryptocurrency miners were found on the workstations of these companies.

In addition, Rushailo announced several cases of cyber attacks and extortion of money to stop them. In light of these events, to develop emergency cybersecurity measures, Transneft has created a working group to combat cyber attacks, he added.

Cryptocurrency mining in the workplace is becoming increasingly common. As it became known, FSB officers detained one of the system administrators of Vnukovo airport, who was mining cryptocurrency at his workplace. To do this, he created a cryptocurrency mining farm and connected it to the airport's electrical network.
