According to local media, last week a French official was arrested on charges of selling state secrets for Bitcoin on a dark web site.
According to Le Parisien, an unnamed agent of the Directorate General of Internal Security (DGSI) was arrested on suspicion of selling economic information and falsifying administrative documents. The suspect collaborated with members of a criminal group that paid for the information with cryptocurrency.
The information leak was discovered by officers of the Central Judicial Police Directorate, another crime-fighting unit in the country. DGSI officers then used the agent's personal code to track his online activity. In particular, during the investigation, the internal security service traced the "origin of file requests."
The newspaper Le Monde also reported that after the arrest, the agency responsible for monitoring "illegal immigration" identified the criminal network through which the agent transmitted the information.
The amount of information and the reward were not disclosed, but if the suspect is convicted, he faces 7 years in prison and a fine of 100,000 euro.
