Canadian exchange closed because hackers stole all funds

Canadian crypto exchange MapleChange announced on Twitter that it had been hacked and went offline. There is nothing to reimburse user funds, so the site has completely ceased operations.

Due to an unspecified error, hackers managed to withdraw all funds from the exchange. We are currently conducting an investigation. We are very sorry that this happened, but until the investigation is completed we will not be able to compensate for the losses of users.

After this statement, the exchange’s website became inaccessible, as did its Twitter page, which has less than two thousand subscribers.

Earlier in the day, the exchange informed users that it had updated its servers to version 2.0 and they were available online, followed by an announcement about a hacker attack 18 hours later.

Although MapleChange is a very small exchange, compared to larger players, even such small exchanges rarely go down solely due to fraud or hacking. According to some clients, 919 BTC (about $6 million) were stolen from the exchange. The representatives of the site themselves claim that they have never had such a quantity of cryptocurrency and the hackers managed to withdraw only about eight bitcoins.

In this case, it is completely unclear why such a small amount of compensation led to critical results for the operation of the site.

Speculation is inevitable due to the current circumstances, however, what is actually happening there on the exchange and what the end of this story will be is still unknown.
